Hair Accessories for You

There have been many trends in the way of hairstyles and hair accessories over the past decades. Since Victorian days, women have been looking for ways to dress up their tresses and express their own individuality through what they adorn in their hair. As with all the styles and fashions, hair accessories too have evolved.
Looking back at old pictures of parents and grandparents, one can’t help but chuckle at the funny hairs styles and doodads that were strewn in girl’s hair. And if we all think back, we can remember donning a few of those funny looking styles ourselves. From satin ribbons and jeweled brooches of older days, to modern plastic clips and bands of today, hair accessories have had quite a run at it over the past years.
There are the basic hair accessories that although continue to change and be altered in some fashion, remain the same in function. For instance, the pony tail holder has taken many different looks and colors, but its function remains that of holding ones hair in place usually off of the shoulders, or away from the face.
The headband has been around since the days of big band and swing, and were mostly worn by little girls to help keep their locks under control. During the 50’s headbands became more popular with the older girls and young women and continued to evolve along with the beehive hairdos and big hair sprayed looks.
During the 70’s we saw a lot of double ponytails with soft yarn ribbons tied in bows, and a ponytail of each side of the head. This look was worn by young and old girls alike. The 80’s brought us a lot, and some would say too much in hairstyles and hair accessories. The banana clip, the big plastic clips and the colorful concoctions that we wore in our hair seemed to coordinate with all of the bright colors we were wearing.
During the past few years, hair accessories have tamed down and are more along the classic lines of the past. Pony tail holders and clips to twist our hair into neat up-dos are the most commonly seen among women and girls. Whether it is in the office, or out with the girls, the trends have shifted towards more straight and natural looking hairstyles, with hair accessories being more functional.
