Along with fruits and vegetables, the bounty of nature in summer ensures that fresh, crisp or aromatic salad leaves are a popular and healthy addition to summer dining. However, buying prepared salad leaves from the grocery store can be rather expensive. What is more, once the leaves are picked, you can say they are technically dead and lose some of their flavour and crispness once picked, as well, they have a limited shelf life. The best and easiest solution is to grow your own salad at home.
You can choose from several varieties that mature at different times and which will also help to keep the salad garden productive. In order to ensure your whole crop does not run to seed at the same time, it is best to sow seeds in succession.
The best time to grow salads is in early spring for those without a greenhouse or a glass frame to grow them under. However, the best thing about salad leaves, is that there are certain varieties that can be sown throughout the summer right up until September, lasting through autumn and early winter. You can even have a salad crops in winter, such as, winter hardy varieties of lettuce or spinach, Oriental greens like mizuna, rocket and also claytonia, corn salad and sorrel.
You can harvest salad leaves as needed, leaving the plants to grow and produce more leaves. Be careful not to harvest too severely, as it may take some time to re-sprout. Which is why, you must sow salad in a succession of rows or in several containers for those who lack garden space.
Lack of space should not deter you from growing salad at home. You can grow it in containers near the house, or in pots or troughs. Larger tubs for growing salads are easier to keep watered than small pots.
Tips For Growing Salad Successfully:
For tasty, tender leafed salads ensure you water your lettuces plentifully. The soil must always be kept just moist, vitally when the lettuces are one or two weeks away from being ready for harvesting. The best time to water is at the end of the day.
For starting an early crop or for prolonging the cropping period, cover with fleece and ensure that temperature and humidity never gets too high.
