Gluten Intolerance Symptoms

June 26, 2008

Gluten intolerance symptoms are important to identify for proper diagnosis. Because most of the reactions to the exposure of wheat are not specific and certain grains are included in many foods an elimination diet may be the only way to truly identify the problem.

The pathological steps of gluten intolerance

The body lacks a particular digestive enzyme, intestinal glutaminase, which can digest gluten products, Gliadin antibodies are then produced as the body’s reaction to the presence of the gluten. The villi in the bowels become flattened, making them less able to sweep along waste products and filter out toxins. The intestines in a state of irritation, becomes more permeable, allowing larger proteins to pass through, which further aggravates the “allergic” response.

Allergic response to gluten

The body responds by producing more histamine, seratonin, kinins, prostaglandins, and interleukins — which can trigger or aggravate autoimmune and inflammatory conditions
Blood tests can identify abnormalities in DNA composure, but the reaction of the human body is the best tool for diagnosis and treatment decisions.

Understanding the difference between intolerance and allergy is important when diagnosing and choosing the proper treatment plan. Allergy indicates and immediate reaction while intolerance indicates long-term effects, which may simply be considered normal. However, gluten intolerance symptoms include –

If you are allergic to gluten, this protein will react with the lining in your intestines (called the ‘villi’) damaging them by causing the lining to ‘atrophy’ (get smaller). This damage then restricts the absorption of other foods eaten, and can cause a variety of symptoms, which include:

# Diarrhea (probably the most major symptom).
# Anemia (from poor iron absorption), along with low Vitamin B12 absorption.
# Weight loss (that may sound good for some, but in this disease it’s not).
# Bloating
# Abdominal pain
# Vomiting
# Fatigue
# Breathlessness
