Get To The Bottom Of Constipation
December 29, 2008
The real men would rather not talk about it. It usually sorts itself out, so why bother. However, you should remember that this can be just a symptom of something else, so it is important to find the underlying cause of this.
Constipation
It is nothing but not being able to go regularly. You might even feel discomfort and bloating if it continues for long. You need not worry however, because it is never serious but it can be pretty unpleasant.
Before the stool is thrown out of our body, its last stop is the large intestine or colon. Here water is absorbed from the residual food. If it takes too long then the stool will become hard and dry. Part of the problem are slow or sluggish bowel movements, however, there is much more involved.
Causes
Consume less fibre and save some visits to the bathroom
If you do not eat right, it is not only your mother or wife who gets angry, even your colon gets irritated. If you do not put in enough fibre, things are going to be stuck in there.
Fibre is an amazing de-clogger. All it does is pass through your system and yes it also absorbs water, so your stool has a lot of fibre. If you put in more fibre, it will be easier to de-clog your system and your stool will retain water making it easier to come out.
Take enough water or liquids.
If do not take enough water, your stool will be very hard and hence difficult to pass. Remember caffeine dehydrates your body. Therefore, go easy on that favourite coffee of yours.
If you change your routine, your colon is confused.
Routine also has a part to play in this. A change of routine can cause this condition. Also, if you are travelling the change of water and food can cause an imbalance.
Go easy on laxatives and enemas
If you take too many a laxative, your colon will become lazy, in that you will become dependent. Therefore, stay away from these.
Exercise is helpful
If you are avoiding exercise, then you will be constipated. The reason in unknown, yet the fact remains.
Some medications are responsible.
Some medications have a side effect of constipation. These include antacids, painkillers, anti-depressants, diuretics, and iron supplements.
Disease can also cause constipation.
Diseases like lupus, multiple sclerosis, cancer, scar tissues in the colon, tumours, diverticulosis, rectal and intestinal function problems can be reasons of your clogged pipes. They are rare but if they are then it is serious.
Treatment
Have plenty of fibre and water. These two are generally enough to deal with the problem. You do not need to over react if the problem does not go. You can talk to your doctor.
