Gay Marriages

Ask just about anyone and they will say they are in favour of equal rights for homosexuals, such as, same rights in housing, jobs, public accommodations, equal access to government benefits, equal protection of the law, etc. Get to gay marriages, and equality stops dead. While, people are supportive of gay rights, on this one gay issue they are on the other side of the fence, they oppose gay marriages.
This could be due to a lot of stereotypes about gays, that gays are promiscuous, they are unable to form lasting relationships, relationships formed are shallow and uncommitted. That may be true about young gays just as it is true about the young straights. However, as gays age and mature, just like their straight cohorts, they are able to appreciate and find their way into long-term committed relationships.
And, why should one be opposed to gay marriages. Allowing them to commit to marriage means the participants would be discouraged from promiscuous sex. A decided advantage as it would slow the spread of sexually transmitted diseases, which know no sexual orientation and are equal opportunity destroyers. These benefits of gay marriages have changed the attitudes of the majority of people in Denmark and other countries where such marriages have been legalized.
To oppose gay marriages on grounds that marriage is a man / woman institution, same-sex couples aren’t the optimum environment in which to raise children, gay relationships are immoral, marriages are for procreation and ensuring the continuation of the species, same-sex marriage would threaten the institution of marriage, marriage is traditionally a heterosexual institution, same-sex marriage is an untried social experiment, are not to be supported.
The real reason why people oppose gay marriages is because they are not comfortable with the idea. Gay marriages offend everything religion stands for such as the sanctity of marriage, and gay sex is unnatural. It stems from a deep-seated homophobia and is a serious civil rights issue.
