Frown Lines
May 30, 2009
Frown lines happen. There’s no avoiding them, but you can stave them off for a little while. It’s a constant battle, though. The most susceptible areas to fall victim to wrinkles are the areas around the eyes and mouth and the forehead. It’s possible to prevent the premature onset of these permanent facial accents with a few simple steps.
Sunglasses are an essential tool against premature wrinkles. Always wear them when you head out into the sun. They keep you from constantly squinting your eyes so that your skin doesn’t relax. Avoiding excess squinting will hold those crows-feet back one more day.
Regularly moisturize your face. Even with an oily complexion, moisturization is important. You can use your moisturization time to give your forehead a little massage, too. Start with your hand in the center and gentlly rub outwards to each side, relaxing those tense muscles.
Sometimes we frown without even realizing it. It’s a sign of intense concentration, and can occur while working, cooking, or even while reading a book to relax. A small piece of tape placed horizontally on your forehead helps discourage the unconscious frown.
We’ve made incredible advances in medicine, and some of these advances provide safe, inexpensive alternatives to wrinkle-correcting surgery.
Turn on the TV and you’re likely to find a commercial for a miracle wrinkle-reducing cream, within five minutes. Most of these creams, however, simply plump your skin, stretching it out so that fine wrinkles disappear for a while. But wait … stretched skin? Isn’t that what causes wrinkles in the first place? Absolutely.
In fact, wrinkle-reducing creams can even accelerate wrinkle formation in certain areas, like the delicate skin under the eyes. If you must use wrinkle-reducers, apply these creams at night, before bed, for the best results.
Retinol-containing creams revitalize cells in the lower skin layers, actively helping to reduce wrinkles. Retinol creams can be very strong; however, it’s best to use these vitamin A rich creams once every two days. You can substitute a regular moisturizer on the off days.
Botox is the newest option for fighting frown lines. One simple injection, short enough to be done on a lunch break and your frown lines are gone. This isn’t a cure-all, though.
Botox is only temporary and must be renewed at least every three months. Botox has been known to have side effects like headaches, face pain and nausea, and so consider your options before jumping at the needle.
