Fostering a Child

For couples that are not able to have a baby one their own, one wonderful option is fostering. There are many children that live in foster homes and need the love and security that comes from having a permanent home with caring parents.
As a foster parent, you are not only opening up your home to a child in need, you are promising to fulfill their basic needs of safety, comfort and love. Being a foster parent is more than just taking a child into your home. The child becomes one of your own and as the parent, it is your responsibility to feed, clothe, provide your foster child with a healthy environment, give him/her an education, and unconditional love.
Many children that are placed into foster homes come from tragic backgrounds. Oftentimes they have been abused or abandoned. They previous home lives were not healthy or safe enough to warrant them staying there. A foster home can be either a temporary solution until the child’s family is able to take him/her back or a new permanent home.
Because of their previous lifestyle, many foster children harbor feelings of fear, depression and anger. They may also have physical, emotional or mental disorders because of the abuse that they have suffered. These children may act out in ways that are inconsistent in children their age. You may adopt a twelve-year-old that continues to wet their bed at night. Sometimes, the child resorts to defiance or violence as a way to express their feelings. Becoming a foster parent is a very challenging role. You need to be compassionate, understanding, patient, and strong.
Children are not just placed into a family’s home because the family wants them. The family goes through a rigorous background check and screening process. The guidelines differ from state-to-state. Some of the basic qualifications of a foster parent are the age that they must be, the ability to give the foster child their own room to sleep, the parents must prove that they are physically, mentally and economically stable to handle a child, and that if there are already children in the household, they need to be willing to accept another child.
