Foreign body in the eye

Foreign bodies in the eyes are material like dust, sand or anything that enters the eye. It causes irritation, watering of the eye, redness and blurred vision. These foreign bodies either stick to the eye on the outside layer, or sometimes enter or penetrate the cornea or the sclera, which is the outer layer of the eye. These objects travel at a very high speed. The foreign body hurts the eye and irritates it every time the eyes open and close.
The foreign body that gets stuck on the white portion of the eye can be easily removed, while the foreign object that stuck to the eye, penetrates in and is difficult to remove. It should be treated as an eye wound.
Steps to remove the foreign body:-
1. Get the victim seated facing the eye. With the help of the thumb and finger, widely open the eye gently and check the eye properly.
2. After spotting the foreign body, wash it out with the help of clean water. Blinking the eye in the water can also be effective in removing the foreign body.
3. If the object is not washed out, then try to remove it with the help of the corner of a handkerchief or clean cloth.
4. If by chance, the object is under the upper eyelid, then you can’t remove it by the cloth. The victim can remove it by holding the lashes and pulling the upper eyelid over the lower lid.
5. If it is not able to come out, then consult a doctor to get it removed.
Warning: Never touch the affected eye. Do not try to remove the object with a cotton bud, matchstick or any solid object. Do not try to remove a foreign body that has penetrated into the eye.
If chemicals enter the eye: Various damages can be caused in the eye like blindness if there is any chemical injury and it should be treated properly. Here are the steps that should be taken when there is a chemical injury:
1. Hold the head under running tap water for at least 10 minutes so that the chemical is washed away.
2. Pull the eyelids apart in a gentle way to clean all the parts of the eyes.
3. Hold a sterile pad over the injured eye and consult a doctor as soon as possible.
Remember that it’s better to protect your eyes when involved in welding, grinding, etc, by wearing eye glasses or goggles.
