Food Allergies
July 16, 2008
Hundreds of thousands of people are affected daily with food allergies. These allergies can be as simple as a rash to death. Food allergies are becoming mandated reported allergies along with medications at most hospitals now.
A food allergy is listed as an adverse response by the immune system to a food protein. A food allergy is not food intolerance. These two need to be determined by your physician.
Signs and symptoms of a true food allergy could include soft tissue swelling around the face, lips, eyes, and tongue. A severe reaction could include your throat area and make it difficult if not impossible to breathe. Hives are another symptom. This is a simple more obvious symptom and can be fixed easily with an antihistamine or Benadryl. Itching, this could be around your mouth, eyes, throat, or anywhere on your skin. Once again, this can be cured, and relieved fairly fast.
Nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, stomach aches, stomach cramps, and abdominal pain can be termed as a food allergy within the gastrointestinal area. Milk and eggs are known to cause this and it is more common than most people think.
People allergic to fresh tomatoes, fresh berries complain about Rhinorrhea or Nasal congestion in which basically you get a stuffed up nose.
Wheezing and chest congestion can be deadly. Many people with asthma are allergic to nuts and this can become a severe medical issue if the person consumes nuts in. You may start out with a sore or irritated throat and then the shortness of breath starts. Pretty soon it’s hard to swallow, hard to breath and your wheezing is just a noise of you trying to get air.
Any of these allergic reactions can lead to what is called anaphylactic shock. That is a system reaction that involves more than one part of your body, and sometimes several causing heart problems, breathing problems, low blood pressure, a mental loss of what is actually going on around you, and possibly death if not treated immediately.
As mentioned above, most of these anaphylactic shock episodes happen with nuts, dairy products, eggs, seafood shell and fresh and many other types of anaphylaxis foods.
People with a combination of diseases that attack the immune system seem to be more prone to food allergies. It’s not known why, but has been connected with people with rheumatic conditions, asthma, and even skin disorders like eczema. This is called an atopic syndrome food allergy.
There is a list of “the big eight” food allergies. They consist of milk, eggs, wheat, nuts, seafood, shellfish, soy, and actual peanuts. These count for more than 80% of the food allergies worldwide. Due to this, the FDA has required that all food packaged must contain an area that tells consumers if the food was processed in a plant that also processes milk, eggs, wheat, nuts, peanuts, seafood, shellfish, and soy. The next time you are reading a label of your food, look at the bottom and it will say “may contain trace amounts of …” this has drastically reduced the deaths in the US from food allergies by cross contaminations.
