First aid to skin burn

As we all know that skin is one of the most important sense organ of our body. It provides protection to our body against various infections. Skin also helps us in sensing or feeling various things such as pain or heat. As we touch any hot substance, the sensitive points present in our skin reacts and we pull our hand back immediately. Many people go through various accidents, resulting in skin burns. Earlier, it was thought that applying butter to the burnt area is the best way of first aid. But it is a misconception, as butter keeps the heat in the area, thus damaging more tissues.
Your first aim should be to cool the burn, providing relief to the pain. The best first aid which you can apply to the burnt area is cold water. Pour cold water on the burnt area for 5 to 6 minutes. After this, dress up the burn with a sterile bandage. Do not use ice or ice water, as it can cause a delay in healing. Do not ever apply any cream, oil or spray as a risk of infection is there.
Burns are classified into three degrees, based on how severe the damage is done. Each degree owns a different method of treatment.

First degree burn is not complicated and generally affects only the surface of the skin. It can be treated by pouring cold water on the burnt area for few minutes. Some pain relievers can also be used to relieve the pain and burning sensation.
Second degree burn affects deep inside the body and is very painful. Though medical assist is recommended in this case, still it can be treated at home depending on the area of burnt. It can be treated by intake of lot of fluids with some pain killers to relieve the severe pain.
Third degree burn is the most severe case and should be treated by medical professionals only. In this case all the layers of the skin are damaged. Not much pain is caused in this case, as all the sensory nerves are destroyed because of exposure to heat. But there is a great threat of infection in this case, so medical assistance is required.
So, to reduce the risk of infection during skin burns medical assistance is must. Intake of plenty of fluid will help you in avoiding dehydration. Proper care of the burnt area is necessary to avoid serious complications.
