Fashion Careers
May 16, 2009
You may think that fashion design is the only career available in the exciting industry of fashion but, in fact, there are many more options that you should consider. You don’t necessarily have to be creative to get in on some of the available jobs in this multi-billion dollar industry.
It is a great field for housewives looking to start a new career or anyone wanting to make a career change. A fashion career may offer the excitement needed for those interested in the fashion field.
Working from home
The easiest way to get started in this field may be to align yourself with a skilled tailor (unless you are one yourself) and take orders to sew from home for others. Many people are skilled in the art of sewing and/or designing clothing but don’t know how to market their skills.
By taking on these small projects you get your name out into the market. You will build relationships with customers, fabric suppliers, and others involved in the ordering process.
You could easily set yourself up to take orders online or over the phone. You could start out small, working locally, and expand to a larger scale at a later point once you learn more about the business.
Fashion communication and advertising
Fashion communication is a brand new avenue of the industry that is attracting many people from the fashion industry. With the introduction of international brands to the Indian market, fashion communication professionals have their hands full trying to promote and advertise the different brands available today.
They must keep up with not only the brands but also the current trends. It might help to have a degree in this field and NIFT offers a 4-year course revolving around fashion communication. This degree can lead to a great career working as a fashion stylist, fashion writer, or even as a public relations professional.
Training for the world of fashion
Although many people find their way into this industry without much training or education, it would be advantageous for you to have a good knowledge of fashion.
A degree in fashion would definitely give you the competitive edge when applying for a job because employers would take you more seriously. Studying fashion would give you a well-rounded view of the industry and help you to see it’s tremendous scope.
Obtaining a degree in fashion, whether it is specialized in management, technology, or merchandising, will certainly make you more employable in the industry.
