July 1, 2008

Winter has arrived and temperatures hover around the with -20 degree centigrade mark. Chill winds blow drying out your skin and making it flake, just a few of winter problems one has to put up with. It’s time for some skin winter care i.e. cream cleansers, layering serums, night creams etc.

Winter months are without doubt the nastiest months of the year. They play havoc with skin and hair, forcing one to dress in layers and layers of clothing as white snow layers the ground. However, you can unfreeze your skins potential with a few of the following skincare tips.

You are just recovering from summer sun damage to the skin, working to repair it, when autumn and winter months force you to labour hard to combat the effects of both summer and winter. If, you are wise you will have worn quality SPF in the summer and will continue to do so in winter, even though the sun is not shining hot and bright. As you know, snow reflects the sun and causes burns, while don’t let cloudy days fool you into thinking you don’t need your SPF protection. Hey, you are just as liable to be hit with the sun’s damaging rays filtering through the layers of clouds to wreak havoc on your skin and hair. So, no matter whether it’s a bright sunny day, or clouded over, or it’s just a mild winter sun, SPF protection is required no matter whether it is summer, fall or winter.

Winter skincare doesn’t just stop with a SPF lecture. There are many other things you can do to keep your skin looking cared for and beautiful. As everyone knows our skin is made up of different layers. The outer layer is called the epidermis and is the most likely target of the harsh elements of our environment, as it is not easy to reach the dermal layer below it. You must have noticed that the epidermis constantly peels off and rejuvenates itself. However, during the moulting, our skin looks dry and loses the natural glow. Skin peeling is more likely to occur during the winter months as dry winds take their toll of our natural skin oils. As well, a number of people suffer from skin allergies that have a detrimental effect on the skin, even leading to infections.

The most important skincare precaution to be taken during the winter season is to keep your body hydrated, just as you do in the summer. Drink loads of water and if you have dry skin, use a humidifier to keep your skin from drying out. In winter time everyone keeps the doors and windows virtually sealed to keep out the cold, which means indoor air can become uncomfortably dry for the skin. Relatively inexpensive, humidifiers are a great skincare investment. Place them strategically around the house for great skin care benefits.

Invest in quality skin care moisturizers and cream for the face and the hands, which must not be forgotten, as skin care is not just about the face, rather is about skin that is exposed to the heat and the cold. Use creams and lotions loaded with skin lubricants and massage them well into the skin, especially around the area where the nose wrinkles into deep clefts that run down either side of your nose.

Last but not least, layer your clothing, so you can peel off a clothing item when you begin to feel hot inside the house. Slip on another layer when stepping outdoors to ward off the cold. Layering clothing is the best way to keep warm as warm is trapped within each layer of clothing, keeping you as snug as a bug in a rug! With adequate care, you can face the winter by unfreezing your skin!
