Eye floaters or spots

Eye floaters or spots are the small, semi-transparent specks that are cloudy in appearance that you see as you move your eyes. They are actually particles present in the fluid, which is inside your eye and you notice them only when they come in your line of sight.
They are within your eyes and so will move when your eyes move and if you try to focus on them directly, they will dart away.
Causes
A fluid keeps the shape of eye intact. It nourishes the eye and helps the focusing of light. Often, before birth, protein particles or some natural materials are left either floating or simply suspended in the fluid. If these particles are large then they will cast shadows. That is what makes them visible.
The eye fluid changes with age, it may start to thicken or shrink and form clumps or strands inside the eye. It can also result from certain eye diseases or injuries.
People suffering from nearsightedness have this. Also, if you have had a cataract operation, YAG eye laser surgery or have had inflammation inside the eye, then you might have them.
Signs
If you see spots or some shadowy shapes go by in front of your line of sight, then that is a floater.
They may also appear as circles, small dots, veils, lines or cobwebs. You will see those most when looking in front of a blank wall or when reading. You can have several floaters or more. Although annoying, they are painless most often.
In case of older people, flashes of light are more common.
Optometric examination will help to detect any floaters. An instrument called an ophthalmoscope is used to look inside the eye and the optometrist will be able to detect their presence. If there is any cause for concern, they you will be required to consult a doctor.
How can they be treated?
If the retina is not bleeding and you do not have unwanted tears or weak spots, then treatment is not necessary. However, if your retina incurs a tear, you will need treatment. A doctor uses a special argon laser to do it.
If floaters are in the fluid, then you might be treated. However, the jury is still out on this one.
