Eye Exams
January 8, 2009
Some people fear eye exams because they fear that they may end up with glasses. You cannot be more stupid if you think like that. Avoiding your eye problems is not the perfect way to treat your eyes. You need to have them checked regularly to avoid any possible disorders, even partial blindness.
Is an eye exam necessary?
This might persuade you a little bit, if the earlier you detect a problem the easier it becomes to treat. Putting it off will not solve the issue; it will only make it bigger. Even if you seem to have no problem with your sight, you might be having some minor problems, which, if left untreated, can lead to major concerns later on.
Where should I go for an eye exam?
There are three professionals who can help you here, ophthalmologists, optometrists and opticians. Ophthalmologists are trained medical doctors who can treat vision problems, even perform eye surgeries.
Optometrists can prescribe you eyeglasses; however surgery is not on their list. Opticians mainly deal with eye accessories. They fit, adjust and repair glasses. They work with the other two and mainly work around glasses.
Will I have to write a test for this exam?
You might have seen this already, the big chart with alphabetical letters of different sizes printed on it. The doctor will shine a light in your eyes and get a general idea about your vision. This is retinoscopy.
Then the exact prescription comes with refraction test. You will try on different lens until you find out which one is the best for you.
In the cover test, both your eyes will be checked individually by covering one and telling you to focus. Then comes the slit-lamp test in which the doctor will look inside your eyes with a slit lamp or biomicroscope. This will allow him to detect any major problems, like cataracts or corneal ulcers or others.
Then comes the glaucoma test in which pressure inside the eyes is checked by a puff of air or the applanation tonometer, which measures the pressure by contact. It is completely painless. The doctor will give you some drops so that your pupil becomes really large and he can see clearly inside. Therefore, you should bring with yourself a pair of sunglasses to protect yourself from light after you leave his office.
How long should I wait before getting my eyes checked?
Adults between 20 and 49 should get eye exams every three to five years, and those up to 64 should get their eyes checked every 2-4 years. Seniors over 65 should be getting eye exams every one or two years. People with glasses or contacts should get yearly tests.
What should I ask the doctor?
You should ask about whatever doubts you may have. Besides that you can ask if you can drive yourself home and about the care you should take of your glasses or contacts. Also when you next exam should be.
Therefore, take proper care of your eyes. After all, they are the lamp of your body.
