Enjoy a Hike in the Winter

April 21, 2009

hikeinwinterThere are a number of locations rich in heritage that have been preserved over a period of years and that will provide the opportunity for lots of enjoyment.

These locations are right within our state and local systems, as well as national parks which are open for all to utilize and enjoy.  Instead of sitting at home in the winter, you should take advantage of these opportunities and enjoy the outdoors.

By following these four steps you will be able to maximize the joy of your hike.

1.    Research your hiking area – states such as California, Wyoming and Colorado all have great hiking spots; you can also get useful data from your local parks center.

You can also find further information from websites, maps from the park offices, and visitor centers. It is advisable that you never start a hike without knowing all the details of the area.

2.    Know the weather conditions and environment – check whether the area you are planning to visit has had heavy rain, flooding or snow and prepare for the pertinent weather conditions.

If you do not plan ahead you might miss out on the hike. Also research local plants and animals indigenous to the area.  Always avoid poison ivy.

3.    Wear clothing suitable for the terrain and hiking conditions – wear clothing that is both comfortable and well suited for the weather conditions.

Avoid cotton clothing; take clothing that keeps moisture away from your skin and helps keep you warm.  Natural and synthetic fibers are often recommended.

Wear layers of clothing to keep you warm. All hikers should wear comfortable socks and shoes; otherwise the hike could be quite painful.

Always carry a hat for cold weather because more than 50% of your body heat is lost through your head.

4.    Carry a first-aid kit – this item is essential and may save your hike.  Any standard kit available through local sports goods stores or department stores is good choices; or you can build your own.

The kit should contain bandages and gauzes of various shapes and sizes, different tapes to cover wounds, suntan lotion, a water resistant blanket, common medications such as aspirin, laxatives, and anti-diuretics, a multi-purpose tool such as a knife or scissors, and a sewing needle and thread.

You should carry a cell phone for emergencies. Carry all these items in a waterproof bag.

The above will help you achieve a comfortable and enjoyable hiking experience.
