Energy Draining Food
September 2, 2008
Did you know that what we eat not only affects our energy levels, but also our mood. Nothing is truer than the saying ‘You are what you eat!’ India’s ancient system of medicine i.e. Ayurveda knew what it was talking about when it laid great emphasis on what we put into our bodies. It recommends we eat certain foods and avoid others to maintain a balance. So, if we are what we eat, then you can be sure that there are some energy draining foods that should be avoided.
Missing Meals
Missing meals is not to be recommended at all. If, we don’t eat, we not only seriously drain our energy, but our metabolism also slows down resulting in weight gain. This is due to the fact that it goes into famine mode and begins to conserve energy by storing it as fat. Not only that, notice how cranky you get whenever you have missed a meal. So, if you want to lose weight, don’t skip meals. Rather, eat healthy, eat smaller and more frequent meals, watching what you eat.
Fatty And Fried
As everyone knows the body finds it difficult to digest fatty and fried foods. When we eat fried and fatty foods, blood is drained away from our extremities to our internal organs, anywhere from six to eight hours to aid digestion,. Instead of frying food, steam or stir fry, eating a healthy diet of fresh fruits and vegetables, legumes, tofu, lean meat etc.
Energy Drinks
Full of sugar and caffeine, the boost given by energy drinks only works in the short term. Ultimately, blood sugar levels drop lower than before having the drink and leave you feeling absolutely drained. When thirsty, you would be better of drinking plain water or a fruit juice in place of an energy drink.
Low-Iron Foods
The body need iron for using energy, which is why when it is low on iron, one feels slow an tired. So, instead of going for chicken breast, opt for a high in iron chicken thigh, which is a better option. Pumpkin seeds with their high iron content also make for a great mid-day snack.
Red Wine
Wine with lunch seems like a great idea, but alcohol being a depressant will leave you drained of energy. As well, red grapes with their high melatonin content, a sleep-producing hormone, will make you sleepy. So, if you are in a position to take a siesta after lunch, go ahead and have a glass or two. But, if you have to make it back to work, avoid red wine with lunch.
