Encourage your Child to be Active
Today children are not as likely to grab a ball or a bicycle and play outside. Nowadays children are glued to their computers, video games and televisions as a way of entertainment. This lack of interest in physical exercise has made our children lethargic; they have a low mental stimulation and oftentimes become obese. It is up to the parents to encourage their children to turn off the computers and video games and get off their bottoms and go outside to run around. To get your child excited again about playing outside, try some of these tips.
Find a game that is age appropriate and will interest them. If the game interests them, they will look forward to getting out of the house. Perhaps you can erect a basketball net in your driveway or buy them a skateboard if they are old enough. For younger children, keep the game simple and at a good pace; like tag or a treasure hunt in the back yard.
Encourage your child to go to the neighborhood playground where they will find children from the same age group. Have them make friends. New friends will entice a child to return to the playground.
Make sure that the games they play are challenging. If a game is too simple they will grow bored quickly. On the other hand, the game should not be too challenging. If a child feels that there is no way for them to win a game, they may become frustrated and just walk away from it.
Set an example for your child. When you get home, instead of sitting down in front of the television, join your child outside for some play time. Or if the weather is not right or it’s too dark outside, pick an intriguing game to be played indoors such as checkers.
Encourage your child to try new games. Assure him/her that it is not important to win at every game played, but playing is for the experience and the opportunity to build new friendships.
