Emotional Eating Disorder

You know what being emotional means. You also know what eating is. So what do you think about the phrase ‘Emotional Eating Disorder’? Perhaps you or people you have seen find ecstasy or emotional relief in eating food materials. Such individuals may be struggling with mental conflicts, but the problems get resolved to some extent when they eat food. This disease is called an emotional eating disorder. The people with this problem do not see food as a source of energy but as an escape from mental stress. Then they eat without any control and this unhealthy situation may lead them to various consequences in the future.
What happens next?
As mentioned earlier, various mental stress factors like depression, boredom, nervousness, and envy may lead the patients into compulsive food eating. The patients do not worry about the consequences while eating, but sometimes become conscious of them afterwards, which further worsens the situation. ‘Bulimia’ and ‘anorexia’ are the diseases commonly found in persons having emotional eating disorders. In the first case, the patients overeat food materials and in anorexia, they try to control the weight of the body through starvation methods.
Reasons
1. Psychological- the patients eat in excess to reduce body pain like headache.
2. Social- this involves excessive eating to become part of new surroundings. In this case, an inferiority complex may be what allures the patient.
3. Emotional- in this state various problems like boredom, jealousy, or fatigue are found to get alleviated while eating junk food.
4. Situational- in this situation, while watching films in cinema halls, it become a tendency to eat though not being hungry.
Tips to identify the disease
1. You should always ask questions when an uncommon desire for food occurs. Try to differentiate between real hunger and emotional hunger. You can easily find that desire for food items like ice cream, pizza and chocolate are merely emotional and your body really does not need them.
2. If you think you are being trapped in emotional hunger and the mind earnestly needs food, try to escape from the situation. You could swim, dance, or sing to change the environment.
3. You diet system should be in balanced state. Include fruits, vegetables and fiber food materials in your breakfast time. Exercises also help you to get rid of over eating thought. Find time to spend in gym or just have a jogging in mornings. If you cannot sort out the temptation, better to visit an expert immediately.
