Eliminate Body Odor For Good
December 16, 2008
There are times when we come across people who smell like skunk. You must have thought why some people have such strong body odor.
Now what exactly is body odor? It is a combination of bacteria and sweat. Sweat is actually odorless; it’s the bacteria on our body that creates bad smell.
Human beings generate two types of sweats, eccrine and apocrine sweat. Eccrine sweat is odorless and is generated to lower our temperature, like when we exercise or when it is hot. It is produced all over the body.
While apocrine is a special type of sweat which is produced in specific places like the armpits, feet, hands, and groin. Although apocrine sweat doesn’t smell but it contains fat and protein on which the bacteria on our body feed. Once they consume the sweat, they break down chemical bonds, and that makes us smell.
Why do you have body odor
Body odor is occurs due to the following reasons:-
Hygiene: – good hygiene doesn’t means washing your body, but it also means washing clothes. Some fabrics absorb bad odors and thus they should be washed thoroughly.
Sweating: – some people sweat more either due to stress, hyperhidrosis or physical activity, which makes them smell a lot.
Children do not smell as they do not secrete apocrine sweat. Apocrine is produced at puberty.
Diet: – consumption of certain foods like garlic, cumin, curry etc, also affects how you smell.
Why do men have stronger odor
Men tend to smell stronger because they have higher levels of testosterone, which influences apocrine sweat production. Hygiene is also one of the reasons. Physical activity is yet another reason.
How to treat body odor
Bathing: – bathing is a good way to get rid of body odor. Showers are, however, better as the dirt and bacteria gets washed away with the constant flow of water.
Deodorants:-Most of the deodorants hide the body odor, while some do the real job of fighting the bacteria. Aluminum and zinc are found in the most effective deodorants and are known to fight odor and bacteria.
While Antiperspirants block sweat glands and so bacteria has nothing to interact with. Antiperspirant soaps also do the job well.
Eating and drinking: – Caffeine, cola, chocolate, and products having caffeine, contributes to body odor. Therefore the consumption of these products should be cut down.
Drinking plenty of water is very effective as it keeps the eecrine glands active thus diluting the apocrine sweat, resulting in reduced body odor.
Boric acid: – application of boric acid on the body after taking bath also helps in treating body odor.
Now go and find out what is the reason of your body odor and deal with it accordingly.
