Education Begins at Home

A toddler’s learning process begins well before he/she enters school. By the time children are ready to enter school, they should be able to convey their thoughts to you through words and actions. They should also be able to recognize numbers, letters, colors, and objects such as fruit.
A toddler should be able to comprehend what someone is saying to them prior to entering school as well. By educating them at home first, you can help make the transition into school a lot easier and you will find that they are able to learn at a faster pace.
There are some fun and educational activities that can take place in the home to keep the child engaged while they learn. This article gives some examples of preschool educational activities that you can participate in with your toddler.
Practice counting with your toddler. You can either use your fingers or something around the house like raisins or grapes. Add and subtract either fingers or fruit and have them recount them each time. This exercise is a precursor for teaching your child addition and subtraction.
If your child is capable of counting, challenge them by picking a random number and asking what number comes either before it or after it. Practice learning colors by pointing out things around the house and asking the child to tell you what color they are.
You can also use fruits and vegetables. To help a child learn their shapes, select a few different shaped objects and ask the child to tell you what shape they are. Or, you can get a crayon and paper and ask the child to draw you each of the shapes.
Teach them the letters in the alphabet, their order and their sounds. Write the alphabet on a chalkboard or long piece of paper and recite the alphabet with them. Stop at a letter and ask them to make the sound that the letter makes.
Find a picture book of animals. Ask the child to name the animal and mimic the sound that the animal makes. You can also work on their memory skills by teaching them rhymes. After several recitations, have them repeat the rhyme back to you.
