Ear Studs For Men
July 12, 2008
In the early ’80s, unwritten social rules restricted men to wearing a single ear stud in the left ear. Anything too flashy or in the wrong ear was considered taboo. If, men wanted to be taken seriously, they daren’t wear ear studs to work. All that has changed as walk into any department store and you are bound to see well dressed men at the fine jewellery counter inspecting silver, gold, platinum ear-rings, only to settle on one carat flawless diamond studs. Don’t be too sure that they are buying them for the wife, as men’s fashion goes, they could just as well be for the man himself.
The latest trend of men wearing ear-rings has become so common, one does not notice who is wearing them. From businessmen to actors, sports stars to blue-collar workers, from a shocking male fashion statement, ear-rings have evolved into an everyday accessory. A growing list of stylish, confident and masculine men are wearing ear-rings, including universally recognized role model Michael Jordan and rugged foot-ball star Andre Rison. In effect, they are saying that real men do wear ear-rings.
There are those men who take to diamond ear studs by default. Case in point, Tyson Beckford who bought some expensive diamond studs for his girlfriend, only to find she had been unfaithful. Instead, of returning them, he simply decided to wear them himself. Bully for him!
The other case in point is Ed Bradley, co-editor and correspondent of 60-minutes, who when interviewing Liza Minnelli in 1986 expressed his interest in wearing ear-rings. Later, Minnelli presented him with a diamond stud, thus prompting him to get his left ear pierced. Weathering the controversy about men wearing ear-rings, he alternates between wearing gold hoops or diamond studs.
And, with changing times, men have taken to wearing ear-rings in both ears, sometimes with more than one in each ear, just as in Ancient and medieval India, when men wore ear-rings, chains, bracelets, necklaces etc. In the 1990s, a man wearing an earring is no longer unusual and they are no longer limited to women’s fashion.
With a wide variety of ear-rings and ear-studs in gold, silver, platinum, copper, etc. to choose from, men are as spoil for choice as women!
