Ear Piercing

Ear piercing is not a new idea; in fact piercing of the ears has been around since Ancient tribes first walked on this land. In fact, mummies that have been discovered have been found to have their ears pierced dating back to 5000 years ago. In history, it was thought of to represent wealth and prosperity. It was a privilege only to the wealthy to be able to have ear piercing. Common people and peasants were not allowed to adorn their bodies with piercing.
To many tribes, the act of piercing is more of a rite of passage than it is a form of art or expressions. In fact, certain tribes thought that ear was the passageway to evil, and that the ear was a place that demons could enter. In order to protect themselves, they would wear a metal piercing near the opening of the ear and ward off the demons.
Most people today do not take ear piercing to that extreme. Most people who don ears that are pierced do so to become more of a fashion statement or expression of themselves. Men and women alike take part in the art of piercing, and although some cultures and beliefs do not approve of men piercing their ears, it is actually been an act since the beginning of piercing for men to pierce both ears instead of the one ear that is typical in today’s society.
In today’s society, gender differences are not as big of deal as they were a few decades ago, when the lines between genders and what was acceptable or not were a lot more defined. Today, it is not just a matter if you have a piercing, but how many. Some people opt for multiple piercing up and down the ear lobes. The area at the top of the ear is a very popular place to adorn yourself with a piercing, and some people have more in one ear than in the other.
However many piercing you have, or plan on getting, it is interesting to know that what was sometimes known as a rebellious thing to do, was actually a deep rooted tradition in time by ancient people and tribes who believed it was for a purpose. Although most people today just like the look of ear piercing, the reasons for getting one or many ear piercing seem to differ for everyone.
