Dry skin can be sensitive to weather and become easily wrinkled. It is essential that one protect dry skin from the sun, wind, and water. Dry skin problems are the result of low humidity. It affects most people during the winter season, when there is cold air outside and heat inside the body.
Because dry skin lacks moisture and oil, it is especially sensitive to skincare products. Dry skin problems affect both men and women, both young and old. However, it is most prevalent among women.
Causes of Dry Skin
Dry skin can be caused by age or cold weather. Other causes include dehydration, the use of harmful detergents, drugs, ointments, or perfumes. Prolonged kidney and liver problems can also lead to dry skin.
Frequent hand washing, the excessive use of hot water to wash the face, and bathing too frequently can also lead to dry skin. Medical problems such as eczema can also lead to dry skin.
Identifying Dry Skin
Dry skin can be easily identified as the skin with a thin, papery texture. It looks listless and feels dry to the touch. The skin pores tend to be very fine. Dry skin is also characterized by flaky patches or tightness in the area after washing.
Dry Skin Care
The use of moisturizer helps to protect dry skin. People with dry skin should avoid cold water and soap, as well as astringent lotions. Instead, after cleansing the face at night, and before going to bed, use a moisturizer that gives the face much needed freshness. Applying a paste of cucumber or apple is beneficial for the skin.
A Dry Skin Diet
Eating a variety of nutritional foods rich in vitamins A, C, B, and D, as well as consuming minerals and proteins helps to prevent the drying of the skin. Those with dry skin need to eat foods such as eggs, fish, carrots, mushrooms, cream nuts, rice, legumes, soybeans, tomatoes, and other green leafy vegetables and fruits. Try to avoid fried foods, heat-processed vegetable oils, animal fats and junk foods.
Tips for Dry Skin Care
Do not expose dry skin to the sun and always apply sun screen before going outside. After taking a bath don’t rub yourself dry. Instead use a soft towel to pat the skin dry. Always apply moisturizer.
Use a towel like material to remove chapped skin, before applying lipstick. Applying a little vaseline after putting on lipstick helps to keep the lips soft. Avoid costly cosmetics, as they are not good for dry skin.
