Doctors have ‘license to kill’ – Abdul Latiff

May 30, 2008

Kualalumpur – Abdul Latiff, the present deputy health minister of Malaysia, was strongly criticized by Malaysia’s biggest medical association. This criticism arose when the minister in his parliamentary session said that doctors have a “license to kill.”

“It’s really unfortunate that he said such a thing. But really doctors are only licensed to heal, to help and support patients, and to alleviate their pain and suffering,” Khoo Kah Lin, the president of the Malaysian Medical Association.

He said Abdul Latiff “needs to clarify what he said” as it could be misunderstand. But he said the organization will not demand an official explanation from him.

Abdul Latiff’s remark was made in reply to a question in Parliament about the excellence of the country’s medical services. He said, “The doctors have a license to heal and license to kill so we (the ministry) have to make sure that our doctors are compliant so that we can safely obtain treatment from them.

“As opposition members rose to their feet in anger, Latiff created stills more commotion by saying, “I meant license to kill in the event of a doctor being negligent or careless in his duties.” Abdul Latiff retracted his statement but say no to apologize.

“The medical council never gave a license to kill anybody. Let me assure the public that doctors are never licensed to kill,” he said.

“In the event that death occurs, it is due to the severity of the disease. If death occurs due to the negligence of a doctor, then he is answerable.
