Do Women Dress For Themselves Or For Men
August 27, 2008
Historically, dressing up has been a political act of war for women. No woman I know has ever dressed up or down without a single-minded agenda or purpose – be it dressing up to seduce a boyfriend, boss or client, or dressing down to deal with a minor bureaucrat, politician or government official. A dress code has always been a matter of choice, especially with a purpose in mind. The only women who do not care about the way they look, are those who have actually given up on themselves and on making it, regardless of the obstacles and terms set upon them. When a woman, who is sloppy, untidy and badly dressed, hides behind the veil of intellectual argument – that her work speaks for itself and she will not dress up for any dumb male colleague – she is actually stating that she doesn’t care how she is assessed by her peers, whether men or women.
But, there are men who confident to admit that they are inferior to most competent women, react very favourably to women who take care of the way they look. Well dressed women reflect self-worth and confidence, whereas, women who dress sloppily and slovenly usually reflect low self-esteem, rebellious behaviour, an aggressive and difficult demeanour, and an inferiority complex masked by superior airs. Most women realise that the act of impressing a man, if they actually set about it single-mindedly is child’s play for them. Men are very condescending about women, and women understand that, hate it and use it effectively against men by superficially adjusting their dress sense and body language to make men feel that they are in control.
Most men who like being in charge of their environment, destiny and future usually have a smart, clever, efficient and extremely well-turned out woman in the shadows, firmly in control of the steering wheel. Depending on the situation and the environment, and let’s not forget the agenda, women dress either provocatively, sharply, sexily, in a touch me not manner, in a style that says all work and no play, simply, conservatively or drop dead gorgeous. Most women dress to hide their liabilities and flaunt their assets.
Remember, Indira Gandhi, the Iron Lady with a flamboyant white streak down her centre parting and crisp cotton sarees that gave her an aura of deadly efficiency and regal aloofness. That was power dressing to control her environment.
Women don’t have to be particularly good looking to be effective. As a matter of fact, a lot of very good looking women have to dress down to be effective because men, in all their arrogance and superiority, get distracted by attractive women, who make the mistake of letting it all hang out, especially when they want something important done. Plain women who dress sharply or softly or elegantly always get the job done.
So while, men prefer women to be attractive, servile and controlled; women, if they are smart and dress right, can always be in control.
