Different Uses of Gloss
June 10, 2009
Gloss has many uses, though not many will admit it. It’s quite possibly the most widely versatile component of cosmetics. Most deem it a simple teenage fad, even if those same women use a bit of gloss over their lipstick.
For eyelids that truly shimmer, the only way to go is with gloss. It can make your eyes pop and draw attention without lots of other, heavier makeup.
It’s superb for daytime application if you don’t want to seem drained, but also want to avoid lots of makeup. A touch of eyeliner on top of the gloss, just above your lashes, gives an added zing.
Petroleum jelly is a suitable substitute for gloss, but it doesn’t have the same shine. It’s also likely to make mascara run, so stick to gloss if you plan on adding mascara to your makeup. If eye shadow is more your thing, gloss can really make those colors shine.
Gloss on your eyelashes can make them look spectacular without being overwhelming.
Gloss on your eyebrows can give a bit of pretty, if unexpected, shine. If you go for glossy eyebrows, keep it simple and pass on the eyelids. Keep it understated, not overbearing.
Another option is skipping the eyebrows, lashes and lids altogether and instead add a shiny bit of gloss along the arch of your eye, just below your eyebrow. It adds some definition and makes your eyes look deeper.
Something most people never think about is putting a brush of gloss on their cheekbones. You’ll do everything else to make your cheekbones noticeable, so highlight them with a little gloss. Use the same shade you applied to your eyes, otherwise your face might look too busy and subtlety becomes lost in a sea of shiny color.
If you’re feeling particularly drained or just want to add a healthy spark to your look, dab some gloss on your cheeks. One of the best tricks you can manage with gloss is highlighting all the spots on your face that light hits first.
Apply small bits of gloss on your nose, cheeks and brow bones. Just remember to keep it subtle. You’re not trying to blind anybody. The heavier gloss areas are confined strictly to the eyelids and lips. Everywhere else gets a small amount, followed by a pat of your finger.
Gloss is a great cosmetic to draw attention and look good without layering on the colored makeup. It provides more natural, but slightly ethereal look to your face.
