Different Perm Techniques

Perms turn straight hair curly and unmanageable hair tolerable by using chemicals to alter the bonds of a person’s hair. Perms work best on a person that has thick hair and hair that isn’t colored.
When sitting for a perm, expect it to take approximately two hours. A chemical perm should remain in the hair for up to five months. There are several different perm techniques available.
Alkaline Perms
Alkaline perms are used on hair that has not been treated with color or a relaxant. An alkaline perm will result in tight, strong curls.
Acid Perms
Acid perms are best suited for people with delicate and sensitive hair types.
Exothermic Perms
Exothermic perms give hair a bouncy curl. With an exothermic perm the chemicals applied to the hair create heat when combined with a lotion.
Spiral Perms
Spiral perms produce a long, loose curl with the use of longer perm rods that are twisted into the hair. This creates a romantic look for long hair.
Pin Curl Perms
Pin curl perms are a temporary way to get a soft wave in the hair. This type of perm can be easily and inexpensively performed at home by taking strands of hair and twisting them. Once twisted, the hair is curled up and secured to the head with a bobby pin.
Stack Perms
Stack perms work best on hair that is all one length. The hair on the top of the head remains flat while curlers of varying sizes are applied to the length of the hair to add volume and different textures.
Body Perms
A body perm or body wave uses large curlers to create a natural looking wave in the hair. This perm works best on straight hair but a person with wavy hair may see the results as well.
Root Perms
Root perms focus on the hair closest to the scalp. Sections of hair are wrapped and kept about four inches from the scalp. By focusing on the scalp, the hair is lifted to give more volume.
Spot Perms
With a spot perm, the hair is wrapped in a roller or rod for a period of time prior to adding the chemical perm.
Volumizing Perms
Volumizing perms work on most hair lengths but the results have a shorter staying period than most other perms. A volumizing perm works great for people who have limp hair.
