October 4, 2008
Menopause is a stage that every woman has to face in her life. It is a period when the menstrual cycles come to a halt. There are many consequences of Menopause. They can be briefly divided as the short term consequences and the long term consequences.
The short term consequences includes hot flushes, irritability, mood swings, anxiety, depression, hair loss and many other associate problems.
The long term consequences include high risks of Cardiovascular Heart Diseases, risk of dementia and osteoporosis and arthritis.
All the above symptoms are due to the decrease in a hormone called Estrogens.
It is very essential to follow proper diet and do regular exercise during the menopausal period. By regularly exercising and dieting the body becomes strong enough to face the problems during Menopause. By doing exercises, more energy is lost and because of this heart gets strengthened, thereby reducing risks of Cardiovascular Heart Diseases. The body becomes both physically and mentally strong by doing yogic exercises which help in gaining control over the mood swings and depression and related issues.
The fact is that as a person grows old; the digestive system starts functioning in a more slow fashion thereby taking a longer time for digestion. So it becomes difficult by the body to consume and digest high calorie foods. When a woman attains menopause she is in an age where her system is not capable of helping her digest the food easily. Hence a strict diet must be followed so as to enable an easier and healthy digestion of food.
A healthy menopause diet consists of having fruits like melons and other citrus fruit so that the water retention in your body is normal. Apricot and figs can be the choice of dry fruits that can be consumed in the diet.
Salads, green vegetables and tomatoes play a very important role in the Menopausal diet. Soy proteins must be included in the diet since they provide your body with lot of energy.
Adequate amount of fibres and isoflavones can be taken in the daily diet. Isoflavones are compounds that mimic estrogens effects. Also omega 3 fatty acids and omega six fatty acids are helpful in maintaining a balance in the body.
The diet must generally not consist of junk food since that would be difficult for the body to digest it.
The water intake and the fluid intake in the diet must be more in case of women who attain menopause symptoms.
Follow a good and healthy diet comprising of all essential nutrients to avoid any short term or long term consequences during Menopause.
