Diet Myths Destroyed

Although today most of us are very conscious of what we eat, and we make a lot of efforts to maintain a healthy body, diet related health condition such as obesity is on the increase. 55% of Americans are overweight as compared to 33% in the early 1980s. The frightening thing is that obesity in children has doubled over the same period.
This is because there are so many diet myths that must be destroyed for people to live healthy lives. Some of them are reviewed here.

Cutting fat from your diet will induce weight loss.
This is false because it is not the fat you take in that matter. The body is able to convert excess carbohydrates into fat. So if you eat a lot of the so called low fat foods, you build up a store of calories which the body will readily use to produce the fat that make you big. It is good to reduce fat intake but it is more important to lower the amount of calories you take in.

Exercising for 30 minutes 2 to 3 times a week will make you lose weight
This is another diet myth. While we cannot deny the benefits of exercise so far as maintaining and losing weight is concerned, it should be noted that the amount of calories burnt in light exercises like walking is minimal. This will show results after sometime if only you maintain the amount of food you eat. Eat more and the gains will be reversed.

Diet drugs are the best way to start losing weight

Another false notion. It is true that certain diet drugs like Meridia which lowers appetite and Xenical which blocks fat absorption in the body are approved by the FDA for people with serious diet problems like hypertension and diabetes, but they must be combined with a change in eating habits to bring about the desired result.

A better lifestyle
The best solution is to adopt a better lifestyle. Avoid eating junk food and take in more fruits and vegetables. Increase your level of activity. That is what is needed.
