Sri Lanka, located just off the coast of Indian sits in between West and Southeast Asia. Formerly known as Ceylon, it changed names when it became a republic in 1972. For a small island nation, it is rich in its diverse ethnic composition. Approximately seventy percent of Sri Lankans are Buddhist. This religion was introduced to Sri Lankans in the Third Century B.C. Additional religions followed are Hinduism, Christianity, and Islam. The nation became independent in 1948. As of today, this small island has a wealthy industrial economy and produces the most income per square foot in all of South Asia. Sri Lanka has also become a tourist hotspot due to it combination of lush tropical forests, glorious beaches and captivating scenery.
Sri Lanka is properly known as The Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka. It has been nicknamed the Pearl of the Indian Ocean. Residents of Sri Lanka speak Sinhala and Tamil as their primary languages but are also versed in English.
Upon gaining its independence from the United Kingdom in 1948, Sri Lanka was deemed a republic in 1972. The nation’s government is Democratic and the President and Parliament are chosen by the people of Sri Lanka. The nation’s form of currency is known as the Sri Lankan Rupee. It equates to one hundred cents.
Sri Lanka is rich in nature. Its national tree is the Na Tree or the Mesua Nagassarium. The nation’s flower is the Nil Mahanel also known as the Nympheae Stellata. The national flag is known as the Lion Flag. It is believed to be the oldest flag worldwide.
Though small in surface area, Sri Lanka is one of the top developing countries as cited by UNDP and UNICEF. The island nation has eleven institutions of higher learning. Sri Lanka is home to the spice cinnamon and is one of the leading exporters of tea.
