Diabetes is spreading very fast across the world. A good percentage of people around the world are affected by this hazardous illness. It does not even spare children. Since there is no proven permanent cure of this problem, therefore it is always advices to take proper precautions to avoid it affecting you or your kids.

It is very important to know the reasons for which diabetes can attack children, so that they can be kept away and safe from them. One of the main reasons of children being affected by the disease is the mother being diabetic during pregnancy. The chances of the child being born with the disease is quite strong if the mother had the problem of diabetes during pregnancy. It must be noted here that we are not talking about Gestational Diabetes, which is a temporary diabetes problem and occurs to many women during pregnancy.

The most common factor of diabetes among children is the destruction of the insulin producing cells in the pancreas. The reason for the same is though unknown. This type of diabetes is known as Type 1 diabetes and occurs mostly in teens only.

The lifestyle and eating habits of children is also causing many to become the victim of this disease. Wrong diet and sedentary lifestyle of kids is making them obese, resulting in becoming diabetic.

Now that we know what causes diabetes, we need to know how to prevent it. For the Type 1 diabetes, there are no preventive measures or remedies as such since the reason or the root cause of it is not known.

Would – be – mothers need to take care of themselves well during pregnancy and keep their glucose levels under control so that it does not affect the baby and the child is not born with the disease.

Parents also need to take care of their children and give them a healthy diet and less or no junk food or oily stuff. At the same time, kids must be kept active. Computer games, TV and internet should be discouraged and playing in the ground and regular exercise should be encouraged. These should be enough to prevent diabetes occuring in kids.

If your child gets this problem then it is absolutely necessary to monitor the glucose levels on a regular basis. Combined with that, a healthy diet and active lifestyle will help the child fight the disease and lead a normal life.
