The problem of depression is increasingly taking hold of people of all ages all over the world. It is common to feel low and unhappy at times due to constant ups and down in life. But, the clinical condition of depression is not ordinary sadness but much more than it. It is a serious problem in which feeling of constant despair, unhappiness, hopelessness begins to pervade and affect every aspect of the patient’s life who is suffering from it.
A person suffering from depression becomes victim to extreme hopelessness. Life to him looks like an unbearable burden, a suffocating box where one feels trapped. The whole world appears a bleak place to live in where nothing will ever get better. A strong feeling of restlessness, anxiety and impending doom overpowers which can also make one cry frequently.
Such a person might either suffer from Insomnia or hypersomnia. In other words, a person suffering from depression usually complains of either facing difficulty in falling asleep or staying asleep (Insomnia), or oversleeping (hypersomnia) Depression is also characterized by appetite changes. A person might begin to significantly lose or gain appetite. This problem results in either considerable increase or decrease of weight respectively (nearly more than 5 kg in a month).
Such a person also might suffer from a strong feeling of self-hatred. Worthlessness and guilt overpowers a person’s sense of self. In such a condition, the person feels extremely conscious before others and is unable to interact with them normally.
A patient of depression is unable to derive pleasure in any day to day activity. In such a situation a person loses interest in every task; even those he once loved. A feeling of heavy fatigue and loss of energy takes hold of him. He is also unable to think and concentrate anywhere and on anything.A feeling of perpetual irritability and restlessness makes the person very short tempered. In many cases, he might even get extremely violent.
Moreover, Negative thinking overshadows his outlook greatly but a depressed person cannot help but always think negative. Also, he/she might exhibit suicidal tendencies. Such cases can often result in suicides.
