A good many of us get addicted to television at a very young age. It begins with busy parents plonking their child in front of the television with a bowl of cereal in their hands and cartoons on the TV screen. Thus, begins life long television addiction, being addicted to TV for life! They learn how to click through channels, live in a dream world of fantasising about TV characters. Take heed, put on the brakes, it’s time to de-addict as television addiction can hamper your social and family life.
You know you are addicted to television when you spend a good deal of time in front of the idiot box. Important family, social or occupational activities are given up, just so you don’t miss your favourite programme or football match. Your attempts to cut back hours of watching television are unsuccessful. Long hours of watching television make you feel listless, depressed and angry. You watch television more out of habit than an interest in the programme you are watching. Too much of watching television can also lead to a poor diet, lack of exercise and not enough reading of books, with the result you end up feeling bored, flicking through channels, endlessly.
Tips On How To Deal / Avoid Television Addiction
Keep a record of how much time you spend watching TV for a week. Draw up a list of fun and interesting activities you could have indulged in, if you weren’t at home glued to the TV screen. Keep it handy so that you can take a look at it, every time you pick up the remote to turn the TV on. Start an exercise regime or pick up an interesting book to read, so that you can cut down the time spent on watching television.
Arrange activities that involve the entire family, such as, a household project like painting house, or interior decorating just when your favourite TV show come on. Set a limit, reduce the hours you will watch television and stick to your commitment.
While, television teaches and entertains, providing much needed distraction from the daily strife of life, we must ensure that we don’t miss out on other things that make life so special. For example, go out for a family picnic, take the children for a long bike ride before its time to put them to bed, or sit down with your partner over a long glass of wine and a reminisce down memory lane!
