November 13, 2008
Health officials are constantly predicting about the next epidemic. You may just be unaware when an epidemic breaks out and the whole human race falls prey to a county-passing superbug. It could be similar to the one that took place in the year 1918, many experts still say about the then Spanish Flu. It was considered a terrible virus that made around 50 to 100 million people its victim worldwide.
People easily start believing astrologers and create panic among themselves when they hear about another epidemic outburst. However, these kinds of rumors keep popping up and have existed during the past 100 years. There is lot of uncertainty existing about the outbreak of the next epidemic and these ancient false alarms might relieve your fears.
Swine Flue
A man fell victim to swine flu and lost his life when the deadly flu made its ugly appearance towards the soldiers guarding in New Jersey at Fort Dix in the year 1976. Panic arose around the globe as experts commented that millions would lose their lives due to this ugly virus if each person was not vaccinated. The U.S President Gerald Ford took an immediate initiative and started a rapid vaccination campaign and 50 million people received vaccination in a short span of 10 weeks.
All clear: The swine flu got restricted to the Fort Dix region. While several people fell prey to this deadly flu virus, some were found to be victims of the vaccination itself. Around 25 people died due to this vaccination as the vaccine produced a syndrome known as Gillain-Barre syndrome. It is a brain disorder that gave rise to paralysis like polio in vaccinated people and this was a very unfortunate consequence produced due to the vaccine. There were approximately 4000 claims filed opposing the U.S Government of using the vaccine.
Avian Flu
In the year 1997 of the May month, several residents of Hong Kong were infected by the virus of avian flue. Around 18 people were admitted to hospitals and out of them 6 did not survive. Fears arose among people as they found out that this virus is contagious and can be spread to people directly from the poultry.
Another rumor took course in the year 1999 when it was found that two children from Hong Kong were infected by this deadly avian flu.
