Dangerous Cooking Habits
December 29, 2008
You might have heard it that cooking at home means saving money and controlling your meals. This is true. However, some cooking styles or vessels may pose a risk to your health. Some of them are discussed below.
Avoid Teflon
Who thought that most common thing in a kitchen could be a risk to your health? However, using Teflon coated utensils pose the risk of Teflon flu, if cooked at high temperatures. Symptoms like headache, backaches and high fever accompany this condition.
It is true that most of us own quite a few of these pots and pans. Nevertheless, do not worry. You can avoid using them everyday or at high temperatures, you can also opt for non stick sprays like Pam instead.
Beware of microwaving in containers
The danger is not in the radiation of the microwave; that is found to be safe enough, however, it is in the containers that we use to microwave. Some chemicals in the plastic may pose a cancer risk or threat to fertility. When microwaved, these chemicals leak into your food making it a health risk. Same is true about Styrofoam and paper coffee cups.
Only use containers that are specified for microwave use and even then do not overheat.
Cooked vegetables and meat may not be so good
The World Health Organisation (WHO) made this discovery. They found that cooked vegetables contain a significant amount of acrylamide, a potent nerve toxin. It affects male reproduction and is a cancer risk in animals. Meat, poultry and fish cooked at high temperatures for a long time also contain acrylamide.
So you can stay away from this danger by avoiding cooking at high temperatures.
Avoid overcooking your food
Do not think that just because you are cooking at high temperatures, all the germs are being killed. Remember that the more you cook you your food, the more it has to stay in your stomach and becomes difficult to digest. If you take a lot of fried, barbecued or well-done meat, then you may be at a risk of colorectal, pancreatic and breast cancer.
Therefore, avoid methods that involve cooking at high temperatures for long periods.
It is not always good to experiment different food combinations
When foods rich in nitrates are combined with amine-rich foods, they form ethylating compounds, which can cause DNA damage. An example would be combining spinach and fish.
This one is still under study. However, it is best to avoid it.
Do not stop eating
It is true that there are risks involved in certain types of cooking methods, but you do not need stop cooking altogether. We can’t stop driving because many accidents happen. Therefore, take the necessary precautions and enjoy your food.
