Dandruff: A Flaky Deal
December 24, 2008
Those little white flakes on your favorite black suit are certainly not desirable. Who would want a dry, itchy scalp day after day?
Dandruff is flaky skin that is shed. It does not make you unclean or dirty. However, it is not good to look at. Dandruff can occur in your scalp, beard or even your eyebrows, chest and back. Skin inflammation causes the itching that accompanies dandruff.
Some misconceptions
There are quite a few misconceptions going around. Here are a few of them:
Dry scalp equals dandruff
Any man can get dandruff. In fact, 97% of Americans have dandruff at any one time in their lives. Therefore, there seems to be very little way out. One thing to make clear is that it has little to do with the dryness of your scalp. So do not rejoice if you have an oily scalp.
Wash your hair and keep dandruff away
Washing your hair can remove the existing dandruff. Nevertheless, it cannot assure that it keeps it from forming again. Therefore, you can keep washing your hair every day, but that is not going to keep the dandruff away.
Why do I have dandruff?
The causes of this effect are not yet fully known. There is still a lack of information on this subject. A possible cause is heredity. If it runs in the family, you will get it.
A hormonal imbalance can cause oily dandruff. When oil glands become overactive, they cause a premature skin shedding - dandruff. If this is the case, you will see dandruff in other parts of the body also, besides the head.
Another reason is blocked oil glands. This causes dry dandruff and it usually is in the scalp only.
A possible cause is bacterial or fungal infection. This is not proven, however. Yeast infections also affect it. Generally, if the dandruff is because of a yeast infection, it will itch.
How can I get rid of it?
Zinc pyrithione, selenium sulphide, coal, tar, salicylic acid and sulphur containing shampoos are good in treating dandruff.
One thing to remember is that you should not keep on using the same shampoo for a long time. This is because using it for a long time will reduce its initial effectiveness. So switching shampoos seems to be a good idea.
Cortisone creams are a good alternative treatment. However, remember that dandruff is incurable and so if you stop the treatment, it is sure to return.
