Daily dose of dope doubles schizophrenia risk

Melbourne: According to recent studies, Crack smokers are at a 40 % higher risk of mounting schizophrenia and a habitual intake can augment the danger 2 times. Scientist at Australia focused their research on newest proof of links between cannabis use and mental illness and found that the involvement is “stronger and clearer than ever”.
“On the world stage, Australians excel in smoking cannabis, so there are very many people who fit into this category,” Dr Martin Cohen who headed the research at the Hunter New England Mental Health Service.
“In fact we’re number one in the world. We know now more than ever that this bodes badly for our mental health,” he said. A third of all Australians have smoked at least once in their life, with about three lakh using every day.
The researchers exposed that a gene called COMT, when defective, is unable to break down the brain chemical dopamine.
Overloads of dopamine activate psychosis and, as cannabis produces a surplus of the chemical, people with this “fault” are susceptible.
Between 10 and 25 % of the population are supposed to have the faulty gene, but as yet there is no way to test for it.
A national survey conducted in the year 2007 of 14 to 19 year olds exposed that 20 % had ever smoked marijuana and 13.1 % had smoked in the last 1 year.
“These teenagers are the ones we really need to worry about because their use is changing a developing brain,” said Cohen.
