Cravings in pregnancy
October 29, 2008
Pregnancy is that stage in a woman’s life wherein she feels the pleasure of giving a new life. It is a very well known fact that pregnant women generally crave for a particular food at different stages of their pregnancy.
Pregnancy is basically divided into 3 trimesters. They are the first trimester, the second trimester and he third trimester respectively. At different stages of pregnancy, different women start craving for different types of food. Some may start disliking sweets and milk related stuff whereas another may start craving for the same.
What is the reason for these cravings? Is it psychological or is there a science behind it: No, it is not psychological. Everything that happens in and around a human being has got its own scientific reasons. Similarly, food cravings have their own scientific reasons.
According to various researches done by doctors and researchers, it is found that due to hormonal changes in the body of a pregnant woman, there are changes in the nutritional requirement of the body. These hormonal changes are not same in all women. The changes in the hormones depend on the structure and composition of an individual’s body.
It is very true that if a woman starts craving for milk or milk related food, it means that her body is in need of Calcium which is very essential in required quantities in a pregnant woman. Hence because the body is deficient in Calcium, she feels or craves for having Calcium rich food. The craving for a particular citrus fruit can be easily coordinated to the deficiency of Vitamin C.
Cravings for sweets like chocolates show that she is in need of more calories in general because of which she tends to fall for sweets and calorie rich food.
It is found that in the second and third trimesters women tend to go for salty and sour foods, which mean that their body needs calories that can be used at a later stage of pregnancy. The blood volume in a pregnant woman increases and hence the cravings for salty or spicy food are because of the higher requirement of sodium levels in her body.
When the woman reaches a stage where the foetus has fully developed, the hormonal changes in her body also ceases to a particular point and hence cravings reduce as she nears her delivering date.
Thus food cravings during pregnancy are not a fantasy or psychological feelings, but do relate to the body’s requirement due to hormonal changes that takes place in a woman’s body.
