Craig A UK Box Office Sensation In His Second Bond Role

Grabbing £15.5 million between its opening last Friday and Sunday night, Quantum of Solace broke UK box office records in its debut week. Directed by Marc Forster this is a sequel to the 2006 film Casino Royale where agent 007 takes revenge for the death of
lover Vesper Lynd. Assisted by Camille played by Olga Kurylenko, Bond tries to save Bolivia from a coup d’état planned by Dominic Greene a Quantum organization member posing as an environmentalist. Mathieu Amalric plays the evil Greene who wants to take control of the country’s water supply.
Shooting for the movie was done in exotic locations like Italy, Austria, Panama and Chile while the title was taken from a 1960 short story in Ian Fleming’s For Your Eyes Only. This 22nd James Bond film was produced by EON Productions.
According to industry publication Screen Daily, seven out of every £10 spent at the British cinema box office over the weekend was on the film. It even beat the previous record set by Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire in 2005 during its British opening weekend that took £14.9 million.
Despite mixed reviews from critics, Quantum of Solace is already a big hit in the UK. It created a record for bringing in more than £100,000 its week, which is a record for the West End cinema. It also took another £14.2 million in France and Sweden.
With a success as big as this, it is almost certain that Craig in his second role as James Bond would not fail to woo American box office when it opens there in November 14.
Critics have raised the question of its longevity at the box office but taking the current success in mind it will not be a surprise if the movie receives the same audience in the US. It might even be able to beat the record set by Casino Royale.
