contraceptivepillsIn this day and age, there has been an increase in the contraceptive choices available to men and women. Contraceptive choices offered today offer protection from unwanted pregnancies and from sexually transmitted infections.

Women more often adopt to use contraceptives than men do. Among the most common methods prevalent these days for women, are contraceptive pills.

Types of oral contraceptives

Oral contraceptive comes in the form of a daily pill or an emergency pill.
A contraceptive pill is taken regularly by a woman, this releases low dosages that delay or inhibit ovulation and the release of eggs.

It may also work by altering the uterus lining. All this will prevent fertilization and implantation of the egg in the uterus. This therefore prevents unwanted pregnancy.

Then there is the emergency contraceptive pill, also called the morning after pill. This is taken within 72 hours of unprotected intercourse to prevent pregnancy. It works similar to the regular contraceptive pill, however it is meant for those not on the regular pill.

It helps avoid unwanted pregnancy after unprotected intercourse or for victims of rape. It helps avoid going through abortion etc. after realizing that one is pregnant.

Choice

With growing awareness and the changes in society, gender, and sexual attitudes, people are being more and more open to exploring different types of contraceptive measures.

The choice of a contraceptive is personal and has to do with religious and cultural backgrounds of the users. The use of contraceptives can help do away with the emotional and social pain of an unwanted pregnancy and also with sexually transmitted diseases.

Uses

Most youngsters do not understand the risks of sexually irresponsible behavior. They hence pay a heavy price for their immaturity, which is social, emotional, and physical.

Young women must also understand that a contraceptive pill does not help in prevention of sexually transmitted diseases like HIV/ AIDS. The contraceptive pill interferes with the menstrual cycle and may have side effects such as weight gain, nausea, and vomiting.

Cigarette smoking can increase such risks, it is important to consult your doctor before using contraceptive pills to ensure that it suits you and your health condition.
