Pregnancy is that time of a woman’s life when she undergoes tremendous pain and several other discomforts. One of the most common problems that a woman faces during pregnancy is constipation. It is a fact that constipation affects almost 50% of pregnant women. The main reason of experiencing constipation in pregnancy is the pressure which increases on rectum continuously because of the growing uterus. The second reason of constipation during pregnancy is the pregnancy hormones. These pregnancy hormones slow down the transit of food stuff through the digestive tract which ultimately leads to constipation. Taking some iron pills during pregnancy worsens the constipation.

You can take several steps for getting rid of your constipation in pregnancy. Visit your doctor and ask him for a different type of vitamin supplement. Do not ever take over the counter laxatives without consulting your doctor as this can be harmful for the baby. Pay proper attention to diet and intake of fluids, as there are several food items which are also responsible for constipation. You should also perform some exercises as they can help you in avoiding constipation. Make high fiber foods a part of your diet such as grains, cereals, green vegetables, fresh fruits etc. Fruit juice and water can also help you in avoiding constipation, so try to drink at least 7-8 glasses in a day. You can also opt for some simple exercises like swimming, walking, running as these can help you in digesting your food in the right manner. You can also opt for yoga for getting rid of constipation during pregnancy. Yoga will also help you in staying fit and healthy and can even help you in having a safe and normal delivery.



Constipation during the time of pregnancy is not a serious problem but it surely leads to inconvenience. If not treated for long time, it can also result in piles or hemorrhoids. It’s better to consult a doctor before taking any medicine or any other medications for constipation as he can give you a more sound advice.
