Christmas on a budget
January 1, 2009
With the recent credit crunch, we are all feeling the crunch this Christmas. Shoppers are growing more cautious about spending. It is difficult to do it, but it has to be done. Christmas can be a very expensive affair if we do not take care. Several people go into debts every Christmas and spend years paying interests.
In order to stay safe and still enjoy Christmas this year, you will need to do some serious planning. Here are a few things you can remember that will help you save some cash.
Make a grocery list
Make a list of all the groceries you need for Christmas. Stick to your list when you go shopping. Christmas brings several products in store, however if you do not need them then do not buy them just because they are on sale. Do not stray from your list. This will help you stay focussed so that you do not end up with a grocery cart filled with things that you do not really need.
Decide on the number of people you are going to entertain on Christmas
This will help you decide how much food you will need. Usually, people cook a lot of food on Christmas, which only ends up in the bin. Therefore, avoid any such waste. If you know how many people are coming, you can estimate how much food you need to cook.
Plan afore what desserts you are going to prepare and whether or not your guests will enjoy them, because otherwise they will be wasted.
Buy reasonable gifts
You do not need to go overboard with your gifts. Try not to buy too expensive gifts or too cheap gifts either. Be reasonable. If you hardly have known your aunt for years, you do not need to spend several pounds on an expensive gift that she might not even like, because you probably do not even know her that well.
Do not go buying gifts for all your extended family. Keep it to your family only. You can decide with your family upon some limit. Everybody is feeling the crunch, so discussing it with your family will only make things easier for all of you.
Refrain from using credit cards
Do not use credit cards because though they offer easy money, the same easy money is pretty hard to pay back with all the high interest rates. If you cannot afford it then do not buy it.
Do some research
Research the internet to find some good deals in gifts, tickets and such stuff. This will save you a lot of money and cost you only some time. You can also do your grocery shopping online and have it delivered at your door, which will save you a lot of time.
Keep these things in mind and Christmas will only bring joy and no pain.
