Chlamydia – The Silent Epidemic

Everyday, women are diagnosed with Chlamydia. They call this the silent epidemic because most women don’t even know they have it till it has done some serious damage. The bacteria that causes this illness is called Chlamydia trachmoatis.
There are some signs that a woman could exhibit such as a vaginal discharge and a possible odor. This in turn can cause a cervical infection which can travel to the other pelvic organs and leads to PID or pelvic inflammatory disease.
Other symptoms besides a discharge that a woman may notice is a burning sensation during urination and frequent trips to the bathroom, redness, swelling, painful sex and even abnormal bleeding. The one thing to know is that a woman can spread this without even knowing it.
Things that can put you more at risk for this disease is having sex at a young age, oral contraceptives, not using protection and sex with a male partner that is already infected. If you are diagnosed with Chlamydia, the doctor will put you on antibiotics to clear up the infection. You do need to keep in mind that just because you were able to get rid of it once does not mean you cannot get it back.
Once you are diagnosed, your partner will need to follow a treatment of antibiotics as well. If he doesn’t, you will keep passing it back and forth between you. To be diagnosed, the doctor will take a culture and send it to a lab. After you complete your treatment, you should go back and get re-tested to be on the safe side.
This infection can result in something that is much worse. The first as stated earlier is pelvic inflammatory disease and the other is cervicitis, which can be the result of PID. This can actually damage the fallopian tubes and can cause temporary infertility. For men, the main danger is maybe some pain during urination and passing on to others.
Be sure to use protection during sex and ask your partner if they have any other partners and if they have ever had Chlamydia before.
