Children Overeating
Overeating has become a major problem among children. Because of it, the percentage of obesity among kids under 15 has risen dramatically over the past 5 years. To prevent that, the first step is to control overeating among children and teach them healthy eating habits that can last a lifetime. This is not as hard as it sounds, but it does become harder as kids get older.
Child psychologist Beth Braun says children often eat to fill the emptiness they feel on the inside. “Many times, overeating is considered an eating disorder. The core of an eating disorder is the need for the child or the adolescent to have control. How will the overweight children take control? Eat more.” She recommends the following to help change a child’s behavior.
You can certainly help stopping children overeating. At home, start with reasonable serving sizes, and keep food for second helpings in the kitchen, not at the dinner table. When you’re eating out, don’t feel like you have to finish everything on your plate, says Rolls, an expert.
“People need to get out of the habit of having a lot of food for not a lot of money. It’s something that fast-food providers get us to think about,” says one of the experts. “It’s really not good value in the long run. It’s better to make a decision to go for smaller portions” He adds further. Furthermore, don’t let children eat while watching TV. It’s easy to get carried away when your mind is busy somewhere else. If kids are watching something on TV at the time they are scheduled to have a snack, there is nothing wrong with setting up a small table and letting them eat there–just make sure you provide them with the right portions rather than entire packages of food.
