Children below 2 years are harmed by syrups – Study

SYDNEY: As per the new studies, children below two years should not be given with cough syrups. According to the study undertaken by University of Melbourne of 325 parents at clinics established an awe-inspiring 98 % had used over the counter (OTC) medication for children aged 0 to 24 months.
As many as 47.3 % had given their children teething gels, while almost all parents had used over-the-counter (OTC) medications to battle pain and fever. Some 7 % used medicines to “induce sleep or settle their child”, or as they were “bad-tempered”.
“Internationally, there have been a number of reports of serious side effects among infants and children given over-the-counter cough medicines,” Trajanovska “There is also a lack of evidence that these medicines are even effective for treating coughs,” she also added.
Trajanovska said the survey’s findings shatterproof the need for sustained education of parents about the safe use of over-the-counter (OTC) medicines.
