Childhood Obesity
July 16, 2008
This medical condition has become increasingly prevalent mostly in the developed countries just like an epidemic. It is a serious ever spreading medical condition found in children. The affected obese children are physically inactive, consume lots of junk food, may be genetically prone or consume a lot of carbohydrates. If exercise is not adopted on a regular basis and the healthy food habits not inculcated, there is a risk of onslaught of heart disorders and diabetes.
ARRAY OF FACORS BEHIND CHILDHOOD OBESITY
Genetic:
It is highly true that if the parents are overweight, the child is bound to gain weight more as compared to kids with parents having a normal weight.
Junk-eating lifestyle:
Children gain weight by eating hips and drinking colas. They do not learn to differentiate between the good and the bad calories.
Loophole in the family meals:
The traditional family choices play a big role in choosing the right combination for the child. If the adults are prone to consuming plenty of bread and no proteins, the child shall follow suit.
No strenuous physical activity:
This lack of fresh air exercise results in calories not being burnt and only accumulated as layers of fat.
Illness:
This may also act as a tiger. For example in kids with low thyroid activity, the retention of fat is more in the adipose tissue.
Binge eating:
This is stress related indiscriminate eating purely on urge and is a major factor for increasing weight in children.
Low self esteem:
Children with low self esteem tend to binge more.
The results show that even if the heredity of obese children cannot be changed, they may be put on a strict diet restriction plan with school dietitian to monitor the progress, joint counseling with the parents to work over the possible low self-esteem of the child, perky incentives by the parent to their kids on controlling calories and junk foods and lots of physical activity like jogging, brisk walk, trekking, rock climbing and vigorous swimming,. Not only shall these bring down the basal metabolism but infuse in the children new drive to live life to its full and improve the bonding with the parents big time.
