Child Rape – A Blot On Social Fiber
July 15, 2008
There were times when the home was considered as the safest haven for the child. No one could imagine that as we progress technologically and advance scientifically, the human psyche may become this perverted to violate a child. The guardians, the relatives and teachers were a part of the safety zone in which young child explored his world. That they may physically and emotionally traumatize a child to the extent of rape is unfathomable. Child rape, thus, may be consider as physical violation of a child against its will thereby inflicting worst form of sexual abuse.
UNDERLYING CAUSES
With joint families going nuclear, both the parents usually have to go out for work leaving the vulnerable children behind with the domestic helps. This is a highly common scenario in the metropolitan cities. There have been incidents where despite police identification, the servants of the neighborhood gang up and rape the lonely child by luring it on some pretext or the other. So, the breakdown of immediate security system is the prime reason of violation attempts on the rise. Further, violent images on television and movies that are filtered at home via various channels depict rape as means of revenge. So child rape occurs due to caste related atrocities as well where the higher caste son in an Indian village raped the daughter of a lower case family as revenge for drinking water from sacred well.
PSYCHOLOGY OF THE PERPETRATOR
The rapist often has history of domestic abuse and split family himself. He is possessed by an overwhelming rage to commit the act and dominate.
TRAUMA OF RAPE
The child suffers severe trauma, anti social behavior, tends to dissociate from the incident, post traumatic stress disorder, rage, revenge and suicidal thoughts. If therapy is not given at the proper time, the child has difficulty believing anyone, not even its parents. In many countries, the social stigma of rape is so strong that the child lives alone with scars and guilt all through its life. The extremes may see the victims developing multi personality disorders wherein the child is frightened one time and a raging inferno at other times. Thus to learn to trust is the basic aim of such therapies.
Child rape is the most heinous of all crimes as it shakes the very foundations of faith and trust we give to the child. The perpetrators of such atrocities should be severely punished. Usually they go Scot free after few years only to resurface with more crimes with the children. The child victim should be given a healthy family atmosphere to recuperate along with loving parents. The counseling sessions should be continued for longer period of time to allow the child to reconnect socially and start new lie afresh.
