Child Prostitution: Rampant Since Ages
July 19, 2008
Child prostitution is the practice of engaging the child as a prostitute by various methods. A child prostitute is the child being forced into detrimental sexual activities either by a middleman (pimp) or by the abuser directly. In the first case, the intermediary pimp usually sells the child to the brothel. However, in the second case, there is a direct exchange between the abuser and the child whereby the former seeks the favors directly for his gratification. Millions of children especially girls are trapped in this vicious cycle. Asians have the highest population of child prostitutes as compared to the other continents all over the world.
CAUSES BEHIND CHILD PROSTITUTION
The children are innocent and are often tricked into the trade by middlemen. It is also true that the kidnapping gangs are in operation, so they target some particular children in a particular area, kidnap them and eventually sell them for a price at the brothels of the red light areas. The pimps have an alternative strategy of convincing the family (which is already struck down by poverty) of the child to send the kid for prostitution to earn good dollars and send a commission home so that other little sisters and brothers also get some food. The parents are generally knee deep in debt and agree to send their girls reluctantly.
Thus in the third world countries, poor economic background plays a substantial role in the failure of law enforcement legally.
EFFECTS OF CHILD PROSTITUTION
The effects of child prostitution basically manifest as the child prostitute falling a victim to several venereal diseases. Not only the child psychology suffers severe damage resulting in listlessness, disturbed attention, anxiety, depression, paranoia, rage and dissociation with the reality, it also falls prey to the poor living conditions, no proper food and nutrition, tuberculosis, typhoid etc. The risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases multiplies many a time with high incidences of HIV (Human immunodeficiency Virus). The children are usually forced to undergo tubectomy in brothels and thus are made to lure HIV infected people who pay higher as they believe that the child can cure the AIDS. In cheap brothels, the teenage girls might even fall pregnant with the risk of he unwanted child contracting HIV even more.
REMEDIES
Strict law enforcement and counseling by NGOs to rehabilitate the people associated with child prostitution is the only key. Children should be moved to safer homes or returned to their parents.
Child prostitution is thus an evil which should be uprooted with all the society support. If the people are willing to adopt such children, no poor shall ever send their children for prostitution. The need of the hour is to improve the financial condition of the parents of the child prostitutes so that the problem gets nipped in the bud.
