Cargo Pant Cool
June 11, 2008
Rather like regular khaki pants, originally cargo pants were meant to be worn for tough, outdoor activities. Baggy, allowing freedom of movement and made from hard-wearing, quick drying fabrics, tough stitching and large patch pockets complete cargo pants. With accordion folds on the sides for increased capacity, cargo pants are easily popular sine they allow ease of movement, while their many pockets allow for extra functionality.
Relaxed or regular fit, with pockets galore, pockets on the outer let afford easy access to stuff in a hurry. They are useful in battledress or sport hunting clothing, as the many pockets are useful for carrying maps, compasses and other equipment in an easily accessible way.
With rectangular panels of fabric, cargo pants are designed to allow bending at the knee and hip without stretching. Occasionally, there is a hidden gap at the knee joint for ventilation. Some cargo pants are styled with zip-off legs, so that one can convert them from long to short trousers according to the weather. Hikera and global travellers find them particularly useful.
Cargo pants came into fashion in the UK in the 1970s, and late 1990s in the USA. Designers began to incorporate the style in their designes for everyday urban wear. Tough construction and useful side pockets (for storing personal items such as cell phone, wallet, iPod, candies, lighter, etc.) proved popular with old people. Their rugged, no-nonsense look suggests military and outdoor activities, and when worn by travellers and tourists, the extra pockets are used to store cameras, film-rolls, maps and bus tickets.
However, designer cargo pants worn for purely aesthetic reasons never find the pockets used. Early cargo pant designs were typically robust and hardwearing, though later designs are made from softer and thinner fabrics with lightweight details, creating a hybrid style though more comfortable, it is less hardwearing and less suitable for outdoor use.
Originally worn only by men and boys, cargo pants are now popular with both sexes. Celebrities like Madonna, Avril Lavigne and Kim Possible can be seen wearing them. Proving popular with young women as well, cargo pants for girls are baggy with pockets, but wider around the hips and tighter around the waist and posterior.
Cargo pants are becoming more popular by the day as designers add a panache and style to plain utilitarian wear.
