Can liver problems lead to neuropathy

Malfunctioning of the liver can certainly be one of the causes of neuropathy. There are various kinds of neuropathy. But, generally, the term neuropathyis used to refer to peripheral neuropathy.
Peripheral neuropathy is a disorder of the neurological system. Its most common symptoms include sensory loss, pain, weakening of muscles in the hands or legs and feet. In certain cases, the patient may complain of tingling, burning, or a loss of balance.
It may take days, weeks, months, or even years for the symptoms to appear. The tingling sensation generally begins from the toes or the balls of the feet and goes upwards. At times, it may start from the hands and go up the arms.
Then numbness might proceed in the same way. The skin may become sensitive to the lightest touch that can be painful. In extreme cases, a gradual weakness of the muscles may take place.
With diabetes mellitus, its symptoms may not appear until 15 or 20 years after onset.
There are many causes of this disease. Particularly peripheral neuropathy is a consequence of some diseases of internal organs like the liver or kidneys, and the thyroid gland.
If one is already aware of the malfunctioning of any of these organs, it is imperative to have further investigation and confirm the disease. A right diagnosis and quick treatment can prevent further damage to the nervous system and the body as a whole.
If the cause of damage to the nervous system is traced to a problem of the liver the patient can only be offered a symptomatic treatment. Under such circumstances, it is difficult to reverse the damage that has already been caused, especially if the malfunctioning of the liver cannot be controlled.
In cases of severe pain, there is not much of a choice, except to have painkillers and anti-depressants. The treatment would largely depend upon your physical activities and the intensity of the pain and your physician is the best judge for that.
Certain drugs prescribed for treating neuropathy are known to cause heavy drowsiness. On the other hand, other drugs may be habit forming.
